British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
