French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
